May 2008 News

Thank you!
A very BIG thank you to all of those who came to our ‘housewarming’ at the end of April. It was really nice to see so many familiar faces, and catch up with all your beary news!

It was a real treat to have Russ’ designer Rikey Austin at the party, she kept us all entertained whilst signing ‘Jilly’ bear – what stories she had to tell! Watch out for the TV documentary of her life – it’s sure to make fascinating viewing!

Samantha Potter’s miniature party bears caused quite a stir – especially the half made little bear – who just brought his head! Seriously though Samantha is such a talented lady – how she manages to bring such tiny little creations to life is amazing!

Sadly, a couple of Samantha’s bears were left behind after the party –they would love to find new homes - so if you think you could adopt one please check out Samantha’s shop page on this web-site.

Charlie Bears new plush range provided a real treat for regular fans – many finding new homes. Slothy Joe is now out of stock but I am hoping for a second delivery of this very popular bear soon.

If you can’t see the Charlie Bear you want on this web-site, please contact me as I have a good selection in the shop, they don’t always find their way on to the web-site!!

Raffle Prizes
‘Teddy Bear Picnic’ by Steiff was won by Joy Salvage from Bath. Joy also won a pink ‘Jilly’ bear – it was definitely Joy’s lucky day! ‘Jilly’ bears were also won by Mrs Ilett from North Somerset, and Matthew Birkham from Bath.

Many thanks to Steiff and Kathy Martin (editor of Teddy Bear Scene) for donating gifts for the Party Bags – which were sold with the proceeds going to Cancer Research UK.

I am currently waiting to hear how much we have raised for this charity and as soon as I know I will put the details on the web-site.

Spanish Theme
Our local tapas bar ‘La Tasca’ in Broad Street– kindly supplied the refreshments for the day, so many thanks to Max and his team for being so helpful. To find out more about ‘La Tasca’ visit – www.latasca.co.uk

Exciting News!
Charlie Bears have just confirmed that they will be at 'House of Bears' on Saturday 20th September to sign their bears!
More details to follow soon........

Housewarming Party - this month!!

If you haven’t received your invitation to our House Warming Party on Sunday 27th April, please get in touch – we still have some invitations left, and the bears would love to see you!

The special ballerina preview bears created by Samantha Potter have already found new homes, and Samantha has released photos of 2 new bears she will be bringing to the party on the 27th April.

Ronnie the Red Panda
Ronnie the Red Panda

We are hoping that the second release of the new Charlie Bears – plush collection will be at the Party – so if you want to be one of the first to see bears such as: Slothy Joe; Ronnie the Red Panda, and Jorja the Polar Bear, please contact Sue for an invitation.

We are also looking forward to seeing Russ’ designer Rikey Austin and hoping to raise a healthy amount of money for Cancer Research UK. Raffle tickets to win the Steiff ‘Teddy Bear Picnic’ are available before the Party, simply contact sue@houseofbears-bath.co.uk

We can’t wait to see what wonderful new bears Christine Pike has been working on for the Party over the past few weeks, as soon as we have pictures of them we will put them on Christine’s shop page, so keep checking!!

The Party starts at 11am until 4pm. We look forward to welcoming you to our new abode, at 22a Broad Street Bath. (See map below)

Patrick the Polar Bear

I must share some good news with you. Last year we sent ‘Patrick’ a small Kosen polar bear off to the arctic. ‘Patrick’ had a wonderful time meeting his real life family and returned with photos of his travels and his passport duly stamped. Raising money for the plight of the Polar Bear, he was duly auctioned off on e.bay.

The other week I had the pleasure of meeting ‘Patrick’s’ new owner Sue Bottomley from Burton on Trent. On holiday in the Bath area she managed to track us down at our new premises, and Sue updated me on what had happened to Patrick the intrepid explorer – since his return from the arctic. He is now very happy in his new home (has given up travelling for a while!) and Sue has given him the title of ‘Angel’ guardian of Polar Bears.

It is official - we have finally set a date for our House Warming Party here at the House of Bears. Sunday April 27th is the date to put in your diary. January 2008 News

Another year has gone - can you believe it!

The bears here in Bath, after a very exciting – if a bit chaotic – end to the year, have really settled in to their new home.
Although sad to say goodbye to lots of their friends over Christmas, they have been very brave and are enjoying a little more space to stretch and exercise!

We are now keenly awaiting the arrival of new bruins to welcome to the House of Bears, and we will bring news of these additions as and when they arrive.

Paul the growling bear is one of our early arrivals.

Did you know that it is 100 years since Steiff first introduced the teddy bear with a growler? To commemorate this great innovation Steiff have launched an anniversary collection of Paul – the growling bear. It is obviously going to be a very noisy 2008 here at the House of Bears!!

With best wishes for a happy new year from all at the House of Bears, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Victoria from Charlie Bears

Victoria is just one of the fantastic new bears from the spring 2008 Isabelle Collection.

December 2007 News

Big and Beautiful – ‘Wolfgang’ by the multi talented Christine Pike has arrived at the ‘House of Bears’.

Wolfgang £ 430.00

When I discovered the bears were moving from ‘Party Bears’ to a new home I asked Christine if she could create a very special bear to mark the opening of the new shop ‘House of Bears’.

‘Wolfgang’ – is the result, a truly remarkable bear. Made from luxury faux fur he stands a towering 20”. His fur has been trimmed and styled with great care, and he has Christine’s signature open mouth and hand-sculpted nose.

He is a very impressive character and can’t wait to spend Christmas with a very loving and appreciative home.

Christmas at the "House of Bears"

We arrived safe and sound in our new home on the 1st November and the bears just love it!

A whole shop all to them selves, and they don’t have to worry about climbing the stairs – what a joy!

They look very smart and grown up in their new cabinets, no slouching here – bellies out and heads up! – and they have already made new friends.

‘Golly’ has travelled all the way from ‘Robin Rive’ in New Zealand to re-awaken a friendship that has lasted for over 100 years.

‘Golly’ is just so stunning you just can’t help but fall in love with his wonderful smile – he will make the perfect yule tide companion for the bears, who are already looking forward to their first Christmas here at Broad Street. So if you just happen to find yourself in Bath over the next couple of weeks, please do call in and say hello – we would love to see you. (Unfortunately – we are not yet open on Sunday’s)

We will be taking a little break ourselves over the Christmas period and we will close as follows:

Monday 24th December - Christmas Eve – Closed from 3pm.
We will re-open again on - Saturday 29th December - at 10am.

Wishing you all a very peaceful Christmas and all the best for a beary, beary, good new year!

Pink Party – fund raising update

September seems such a long time ago now and apologies for not up-dating the web site earlier with the funds raised for Cancer Research UK. The raffle prizes raised an amazing £285.39 for this charity, so many thanks once again to all those who donated prizes for this event.

November 2007 News

Party Bears are moving!

After 3 years upstairs at ‘The Antique Map Shop’ here in Bath, Party Bears have found a place of their own!

They are giving up their Party days (well maybe!) and moving to their new abode – House of Bears, 22a Broad Street, Bath – a very grown up place!

They have been frantically packing their bags over the past couple of weeks ready for the big move on Thursday 1st November. There will be a few tears and tantrums on the day, no doubt! – but I’m sure they’ll recover once they see their new home, and will be on their best behaviour for the opening on Saturday 3rd November.

We look forward to showing you our new abode – so please come and see us soon!

You can pick up directions from the Antique Map Shop, we're just a short walk away across Pulteney Bridge, through the Podium Shopping Centre and up Broad Street (which is the left hand fork) - you'll find us on the right just down from the George Street traffic lights.

Tickled Pink!

What a fantastic 3rd Birthday we had.

Many thanks to all who managed to make it to our ‘Pink Party’ and helped to make it a truly special day.

Having arrived fairly early at the hotel we thought we’d have plenty of time to get the room ready for the exhibitors and anticipated crowds!!, but the time just flew by and before we knew it we had lots of bear collectors waiting at the door to be let in.

I didn’t even have time to see what wonderful ‘creations’ the bear makers had brought along – although I must admit to a quick sneak preview of Sue Quinn’s stand and her fabulous bear ‘The Weavers Child’. Dressed in a Paisley waistcoat, with a swivel head joint, and bendy knees his face was so beautiful you just couldn’t help but fall in love with him.

It was no surprise that he was snapped up pretty rapidly by a regular customer – who just couldn’t leave him behind!

The new Autumn range from Charlie Bears – proved very popular and those customers who met Charlie and Will for the first time couldn’t help but be won over by their charm, it’s not just the bears who have personalities!!

We seemed to have a endless stream of little Hoblins at the Pay Desk – and Kathy’s book proved a big hit too.

Christine Pike’s bears were magnificent (as always!) as were Samantha Potters. Barabara-Ann’s bears added a splash of colour. A big thank you Barbara-Ann for adding pink dye to your own hair, especially for the Party!

Rikey Austin seemed to do very well with sales of ‘Jilly’ Bear, raising money for Cancer Research UK.

A very big thank you to all who donated prizes for the Raffle, all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK (I will put details of how much we raised on the web-site – as soon as the money from the collecting tins has been counted).
‘Melody’ from Charlie Bears was won by a regular fair goer and collector from Weston-Super-Mare.

The Classic Black Steiff Bear will be finding it’s way to a warm and loving home in Oxford very soon!

Other Raffle Prizes won on the day included ‘Emily & Seb’, by Charlie Bears – donated by bear artist Susie James.

Susie James also donated one of her own artist bears – which was won by bear artist Linda Willetts of Hoblins!

(Susie James couldn’t be with us on the day – we hope she feels better very soon)

Samantha Potter won a bear making kit – donated by Barbara-Ann Cunningham!

3 Jilly bears donated by Russ Berrie and signed by Rikey Austin were won by regular collectors and will be in the post to them shortly.

We met lots of new bear collectors from as far away as Argentina, as well as catching up with old friends. It was also good to meet those customers who in the past we’d only ever spoken to on the telephone.

So thanks once again to everyone for a very special day – we went home happy but exhausted!

Flood Victims

July seems to have been a very difficult month for a lot of people and my heart goes out to all those who lost valued possessions and had their homes destroyed by the floods.

The bears here in the shop have also had a slightly traumatic time. Water came flooding in through the roof of the bear den in the middle of July, when the guttering become blocked, and we lost quite a few of our little friends to the water. So I must apologise to anyone who came in to see the bears during this time as we were all feeling a little sad!

I think we are all keeping our fingers and everything else crossed that August will be a lot happier and sunnier!

‘Pink Party’ – July update.

Deb Canham Artist Designs – ‘Pink Party’ Exclusive.

I was really excited when Deb Canham agreed to design an exclusive little bear for the ‘Pink Party’ and I couldn’t wait to see what ‘Little Gem’ – would be created.

I was delighted when returning from holiday this week to find Deb had sent me this image of ‘Lucy Locket’, my very own shop exclusive!

She measures 3.25 inches and is limited to 50 pieces and only £28.00. If you would like to reserve ‘Lucy Locket’ before the Pink Party on 30th September – please e.mail sue@houseofbears-bath.co.uk or telephone Party Bears @ The Antique Map Shop: 01225 446097.

Barbara-Ann Cunningham – has just confirmed that she will be coming to the party and bringing her unique style of bears and bear kits – so if you would like to have a go at creating your own bear come and meet Barbara-Ann at the ‘Pink Party’ – I’m sure she will be able to give you lots of tips!

‘Pink Party’ – Tickets
